Russian folk music, solo performances on various Russian national musical instruments, and solo singing by folk singers.
Russians are known for their singing and dancing. On festive occasions or when friends and family gather, they often play the accordion, sing, and dance. The accordion is their most popular instrument, followed by the violin, guitar, piano, mandolin, and balalaika. The balalaika is a plucked string instrument, also known as a triangle instrument because of its triangular soundbox. It has a wooden body, a thin wooden lid covering the triangular soundbox, a long, slender neck with metal frets, and three metal strings tuned in fourths. Several different versions are available, including high, mid, and low registers. It produces a clear, bright sound and is often played in orchestras or in ensembles with the mandolin, guitar, and accordion.
