The legend is set during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (266–420 AD) in Zhejiang Province, China. Zhu Yingtai, the only daughter of a wealthy family, longs for education despite societal restrictions on women. To pursue her studies, she disguises herself as a man and travels to Shaoxing to attend school, where she meets Liang Shanbo, a fellow scholar from a neighboring county.
