The vast grasslands, a breathtaking expanse of sky and earth, where the deep blue sky, pristine white clouds, and flocks of sheep merge seamlessly at the horizon; the boundless green expanse, galloping horses, and shepherds wielding whips create a picturesque scene; the fragrant mare’s milk wine, the melodious strains of the zither, and the poignant long songs all captivate me. The people of the grasslands possess broad-mindedness and fiery passion; they love to sing, love music, and convey their most sincere emotions through their songs.
The cello is a beautiful instrument. Its sound is rich, full, and mellow, with a lyrical and warm timbre, often called “the most human sound,” possessing a captivating quality akin to the human voice. Its beauty also lies in its wide range and distinctive character. Its rich, full tone is soothing and cheerful, perfectly suited for playing lyrical melodies like “I Have a Date with the Grassland,” “Hulunbuir Grassland,” “The Horizon,” “Wild Geese,” and “The Mongolians.” The cello’s mellow, sustained tone, combined with its rich and varied bowing, vividly portrays the distant, hazy, lyrical, and even desolate atmosphere of grassland music.
Yu Ping, principal cellist of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, plays with meticulous elegance, profound meaning, and tender emotion. Every phrase is imbued with nobility and grace. She perfectly balances technique and emotion; listening to her, you don’t need to sit upright or close your eyes in deep thought to enter her profound and enchanting musical world.
