In 2013, Cicada began to compose for Taiwan. The theme of Coastland was the west coastland in Taiwan, and Light Shining Through the Sea was inspired by the east coast of Taiwan and the Pacific Ocean. These two albums personify the land and portray the feeling undergoing all the changes and damages. Cicada later collaborated with the Japanese label FLAU to release Ocean based on these two albums for worldwide.
In 2016, Cicada selected 14 songs from Over the Sea/Under the Water, Pieces and Let’s Go! with the new recording and production to make the album Farewell.
The most recent release in 2017 White Forest was dedicated to animals including coral reefs, sea turtles, humpback whales, dolphins, as well as cats in the city and birds in the mountains.
Cicada walked into the mountain from the ocean on the 10th year and released Hiking in the Mist. It’s their hiking journal with intention to depict their homeland with expansive views.

2010 Over the Sea, Under the Water
Cicada from Taiwan was formed in 2009 consists of violin, cello, acoustic guitar, and piano. It’s named after Cicada because people are aware of cicada’s existence by their sound instead of forms.
“Over the Sea/Under the Water” is the debut EP of Cicada. Recorded live in the living room, the EP was hand crafted by Jesy Chiang. Narrative is one of the subjects in Cicada’s music and inspiration normally came from daily life. The opening is a tribute to the Morakot typhoon victims as well as an expression toward Taiwanese political standing. The last three songs tell a story from a couple’s separation to reunion. Throughout the naming, orchestration, and the composition, Cicada’s music creates beautiful images for audiences.

Pieces

2010《Over The Sea/Under The Water》EP的概念,改編EP中的「最後 仍在一起」,歌名也改為「晨霧」,借用愛情破裂的印象,說明一段女性的心靈自省、探索、尋求獨立的過程。

Let’s Go

Coastland

Dedicating an album to the graceful landscapes in Taiwan has always been a dream for Jesy Chiang, the composer and leading member of Cicada. She visited one after another coastal wetlands in western Taiwan and immersed herself in the poetic view and atmosphere which became the inspiration of the new release Coastland. The opening track “Flying Sands” starts with a coarse and grainy bass line with violas and violins joining later. The upbeat “Flapping Wings” features the crystal-esque sound of the piano and high soaring sounds of the string instruments mimicking a flock of birds flying across scattered clouds. The continuous and tender melody of the string instruments in “Close to Wetland” embodies the softness of Cheng Long Wetlands in Yunlin County. In ” Withered Reflection”, the western coastal view in Taiwan is musically depicted with a gentle touch, while the next song, ” Blooms in Dark”, is overwhelmed with despair and sadness. The music carrying such complex emotions builds up and paints the silhouette of Mailiao, Yunlin County. It allows listeners to catch a glimpse of hope as the song proceeds. Despite the melancholy composition in D minor, the last number “into the Ocean” sends encouraging energy by its strong and flowing rhythm. The bonus track “Over the Sea/Under the Water” was the first song of Cicada released in the first EP three years ago. It was inspired by environmental issues in Taiwan and became the starting point of Coastland. After the new violist joined the band, this track was re-arranged and re-recorded in the new album to remind their original intention.
The concept behind the music and the performance in Coastland are exquisite, profound, and grand ── fans of classical music, chamber music and independent music will all relate. A truly extraordinary conceptual album that will be on repeat by those of who devote their love to Taiwan.

2015 Ocean

“Cicada brings such shimmering and positive energy to their ensemble playing on this new album – a beautiful celebration of our precious oceans” – Rachel Grimes
Ocean is a collection of Cicada’s most recent releases. Coastland depicts the west coast of Taiwan where flock of waterfowls fly over soft wetland and grey sea with countless factories in the backdrop. Light Shining Through the Sea surfaced from the Pacific Ocean, landed on the eastern coast and offshore islands. The deep blue ocean and rocky shore here built completely different sceneries and stories than the west coast.
The vast plain of western Taiwan used to be farmlands. During the industrialization, the western coast has been suffering from the consequences of the economic growth. On the other hand, most parts of the East Coast Mountain Range remain untouched. However, the beautiful coast and ocean began to face the dilemma of environmental preservation and tourism development.
Ocean rises from the western coast and arrives the eastern coast through the East Coast Mountain Range. We dive deep into the Pacific Ocean to experience the rhythm and the irresistible power of the ocean. These songs took us to a journey to see ocean sunrise, to experience the liveliness and forces beneath the ocean. They are bathed in the sunshine, night breeze; they provoke youthful memories as well as thoughtful introspection. They have never ending stories to tell….

Light Shining Through The Sea

As ocean waves rolling toward the reef and bubbles kissing pebble beach, we dive into the Pacific Ocean looking up to the light shining through the sea surface.
The album “Light Shining Through the Sea” depicts the east coast of Taiwan and the Pacific Ocean. The songs named after the ocean were inspired by Shihtiping in Hualien. Piano plays half time feel like 5/4 to build up image of wave circles in “Rolling Waves” and imitates various movements and forms of the ocean in Shitiping with the strings. “Ocean Foam” uses repetitive melodies to describe the damages human made to the coast of Taiwan.
We started to learn scuba diving in order to be closer to the ocean. Diving into the ocean in Lanyu for the first time, we’d never forget the moment opening our eyes under such clear water which became the inspiration of the last song “Light Shining Through the Sea”. This song reflected emotions and memories connected to the ocean.

Hiking in the Mist

Hiking in the Mist is a hiking journal Cicada wrote with music for the mountains in Taiwan. Cicada walked through misty forest, rested by streams, admired clouds during sunset in North Dawu Mountain and encountered sunlit grassland at Qilai south peak. They hiked up to the ridge line overlooking the city, met wildlife in the cabin, experienced pouring rain and snows in cirque… Growing up in an island with more than 260 peaks over 3000 meters in height, it’s always been in our mind to be surrounded by nature and write about the mountains. At the 10th year of Cicada, we arise from the ocean and step into the forest. Everything we experienced in the wilderness led us to seek within.
